Hey, folks! Two things for you tonight.
First, part two of the world-building-practice (as opposed to world-building-theory) essay. This week, religion in the game world and some of what I did to make it different from a typical FRPG.
You can find it over here on Blogspot.
Secondly, for those of you who have been reading my serial fiction piece, Number One With A Bullet, I'd like to thank you. You make me very happy.
(Those of you who haven't, you don't make me sad, but you do make me curious as to why...)
As it happens, apparently a lot of people really like the character of Becky Backbeat (first introduced here). Like, really like her. I find this a little interesting, because she's not the focus character, and I honestly feel like I did her a disservice when I wrote her. I could have done more with her (and hell, Conroy too for that matter), but the story is about Jack, and so that's where I focused.
Still, though, Backbeat's getting herself quite a following, it appears. And that's where the contest comes into play.
Here's the deal.
YOU, yes YOU, the reader, have until December 15th to come up with an image of Becky Backbeat. If you win, you get a year's paid subscription to DA. I will take no more than 20 entries, but entries may be in the medium of your choice - traditional illustration, digital painting, photoshoots, photo manipulation, etc etc - and must be no more than an MPAA "R" rating. I will accept partial or full nudity (as befits the character), but only so long as it falls within the established behavior of the character. Bear in mind, the description of Becky Backbeat, in its entirety is:
* Five foot two inches tall.
* "Half a loaf of nothing" pounds.
* Has a lot of hair.
* Is the secret owner and proprietor of (and performer at) Waxed Worx, a medium-high-class strip club and bar.
* Is a top-rated hacker/netrunner who used to do high-level black-ops infiltrations.
* Swears a lot.
* Can handle her hard liquor.
That's it. No mention of skin color. No mention of ethnicity or social background. That's on purpose, mind you, but it can make it tricky to get a good image of her, for some people. What I left intentionally vague can be something of a trial for other people.
So, here's what you do.
* Go read the story so far.
* Get up to speed on Becky Backbeat. It's easy. She's only in a few of the entries. You can do this. No sweat.
* Submit an entry to the contest by December 15.
I will then go through and pick my top ten favorites.
Those ten will get voted on by the viewing public. The top two entries win a year's paid subscription to DA. In the event there are no votes (Because let's face it, people on DA can be considerably sluggish in such things), I will pick my top two favorites. The prizes remain the same.
Keep in mind, the year's sub is only about USD 30. Those of you who do commissions for a living, I'm not asking you to do anything more than that as far as your work-to-value ratio. I'm not expecting a USD 200 piece of work out of you for something that costs less than a quarter of that. Even though this is a contest, I am not expecting your master work, here. (Similarly, I'm also hoping that you won't just fling off a gesture sketch and call it done.)
Okay, sound good? Sound doable?
Ready? GO!

In return, I offer you insights into my process, advance looks a

Well I found my reference photos... Wanna see 'em or would you rather be surprised? It will be a challenge for me, I've never tried to draw this kind of face before, it will be interesting to see if I can capture the vulnerability and strength I can see in the photo reference. As a plus I found a picture that could be Becky as a child too, maybe I'll draw both... maybe not.
